SMedia Technology Corporation announces entry into the multimedia solutions market for handhelds
Taipei, Taiwan — October 25, 2004 SMedia Technology Corporation, the first IC design company in Taiwan with the most complete design capability of Graphic, Video, and Imaging related low-power multimedia IC, announced found in Oct. 2004.
The R&D, Sales and Marketing teams in SMedia mainly come from Multimedia Product Department of Silicon Integrated System (TSE:SiS). SMedia holds the most advanced technologies of Graphic Accelerator, Imaging and Video from SiS, together with unique Power-Saving design to develop Mobile Multimedia coProcessor for hand held devices. The initial capital size of SMedia is US$ 6 million, and major shareholders are United Microelectronics Corp. (NYSE: UMC; TSE: UMC) and conglomerate of UMC. Currently, there are 60 employees in SMedia, 70% of them are R&D profession. Mr. HY Lin, General Manager of SMedia, was prior Senior VP of Integrated Technology Express, Inc. (TSE: ITE).
Glamo3360 Mobile Graphics Processor, the first launched product from SMedia in Oct. 2004, is the coProcessor designed for Multimedia Camera Mobile Phone. Glamo3360 Mobile Graphics Processor has the same level Processor for image signal as digital camera does, and total Hardwired JPEC/MPEG/H.263 Encoder/ Decoder. Besides, Glamo3360 Mobile Graphics Processor is the first coProcessor with built-in full 2D Graphic Accelerate Engine (follow J2ME standard) and 3D Graphic Accelerate Engine (follow OpenGL_ES 1.0, 1.1 and D3DM standard). Under current Camera Mobile Phone design structure, Glamo3360 Mobile Graphics Processor could help to easily upgrade Camera Mobile Phone to Media Mobile Phone with Video Conference, Video Recording, Graphic User Interface, and Complex 3D Games, under least design change and investment. Undoubtedly, the release of Glamo3360 Mobile Graphics Processor become focal point because it is the first highly integrated IC for mobile phone with all visual functions in the world.
SMedia was invited by Khronos Group to deliver a speech of OpenGL ES in PT/Expocomm 2004 Beijing. OpenGL ES is a graphic API developed for 3D handheld devices, defined by Khronos Group. Khronos Group focuses on developing OpenGL ES and OpenML for different applications. These license-free and open API could be applied to various platform and peripheral, and providing play/ edit function for motion media.
